Life story

Peggy was born in Dingle, County Kerry, the youngest of five, and spent almost her whole life within sight of the bay. She taught at the national school for thirty-four years. Generations of children learned to read at her table by the window, and many of them still remember the barley sugar she kept in her desk for good days and bad ones. She is remembered by Michael and Anne, six grandchildren on three continents, and a town full of former pupils.
  1. By the bay

    1936 – 1958

The hills above the bay, where she walked every evening

The youngest of five on a farm above the harbour. She walked the hills every evening, and later said she learned the names of the boats before she learned her letters.

  2. Sunday letters

    1968 – 2020

Letters from Boston and Sydney, kept in a biscuit tin

When Michael left for Boston and Anne for Sydney, she wrote to them every Sunday after Mass — two letters a week for over forty years. She kept their replies in a biscuit tin, sorted by year.

  3. Her garden

    Always

    Her garden in June

Climbing roses over the stone wall, sweet pea along the path, and a bench where she drank her tea and watched the weather come in over the hills.

Memories from family and friends

Example memories. On a real page, family and friends can leave one without an account, and each is checked before it appears.

  1. Siobhán (granddaughter, Boston)

“Every summer we flew over and Nana had the kettle on before the car stopped. I still have the letter she wrote me for my First Communion.”

  2. Tom Keane

“Mrs Doyle taught me to read in 1962. She never once raised her voice, and somehow nobody ever misbehaved. Thank you, Miss.”

  3. Anne (daughter, Sydney)

“Mam, the roses came up again this year. Michael sent a photo. We miss your Sunday letters more than we can say.”

For visitors

Peggy rests near the western wall, under the yew tree. Sweet pea or a few roses from your own garden would have pleased her more than anything from a shop.
